Case Study: Ashen

Here is the process of a job I did for an ad campaign for Nokia.  It came from Grey Advertising Worldwide.  It's for a game called Ashen for the N-Gage game system.  This was to be an installation in a public commuter train in Canada.  The hero was going to be above the doors and on the front of the train.  The alien(s) would be duplicated in photoshop and placed at the back of the train.  The passengers would feel like they were caught int he middle of a gunfight.

It starts with the initial sketch from the art director, reference images from in-game artwork, images from the live action commercial, and some 3-D renderings which were all provided to me as reference material.

Unfortunately, there was a hostage situation just prior to this campaign where a man took a woman hostage at gunpoint.  So the art director wanted the gun to be played down.  The problem became, "How do you promote a first person shooting game that relies heavily on guns without showing guns?"

In the end, this campaign was so successful that kids were stealing the artwork from the train. Overall for me, this was a fun campaign to work on.
